The form of Tillandsia ionantha from Mexico is less common in cultivation than the Guatemalan form but it is generally more desireable because it is less prone to rotting, especially when cultivated indoors. T. ionantha is one of the most attractive of the smaller species. Normally green, it will turn bright red when it blooms in order to attract hummingbirds to pollinate it. There are also many interesting clones, cultivars, and hybrids of T. ionantha.  Give it lots of light and, while it likes to be dry, don’t let it dehydrate.
